Video Guide: How to Defeat Umi-bozu

Umi-bozu can be a tough boss to face, both in part to the high damage you can take, and the fact that there's a lot of ways you can fall to your death. There's also the annoying additional enemies you may have to fight - so we highly recommend you take the time to light the three bonfires in the level. Doing so provides you with three sources of fire to enhance your weapons - but more importantly, so long as they are active, they'll instantly kill the lesser Umi-bozus that try to jump onto the stage. It's up to you whether you want to trade increased fire damage for more adds to worry about.

Beyond that, Umi-bozu will alternate hopping to either sides of the stage, where the boss will start hurling things at you - usually blobs of water that deal elemental damage, and debris that can sting if you don't move out of the way. What you really need to watch out for is when it raises tentacle arms to slam down. As it does so, note the light orbs that flow up its hands - these are weak spots you should try getting hits off before they withdraw. You'll also need to be ready to run at a moment's notice, as Umi-bozu can open its gaping maw to unleash a blast of energy that'll likely kill you in one hit if you are standing still. If you see it getting ready, run to the side and then attack from the sides as the blast happens.

After taking around half damage, Umi-bozu will take to the center stage, again with adds if you haven't kept the bonfires lit. This part of the fight can be a bit easier so long as you attack carefully. Keep strafing to avoid the slam attacks, and when Umi-bozu retracts, run in to deal damage before stepping back as the blob explodes back into life. Whenever he slams down, look for the large yellow core that is his weak point. If he hops up into the air, run back and wait for him to land before getting a few hits in. As long as you're patient, and keep him in the center so you don't get pushed off, the boss will fall before long.
